BOTOX neurotoxin treatment helps control the symptoms of severe underarm sweating when topical medicines do not work well enough by temporarily blocking the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands. When the sweat glands don’t receive chemical signals, the severe sweating stops. BOTOX injections are expected to temporarily stop the production of excessive sweat in the treated areas only. Sweat continues to be produced elsewhere.Where does the sweat go?Your sweat doesn't go anywhere or get backed up because the sweat simply is not produced in the areas treated with BOTOX. Remember, the rest of your body is free to produce moisture normally.BOTOX treatment is proven. In a clinical study involved 322 patients with severe underarm sweating:*Half of the patients had a treatment duration of at least 201 days or 6.7 months.157 out of 104 BOTOX treated patients (55%) achieved an effective response—compared to only 6 out of 108 treated without BOTOX (6%). Patients were defined as "responders" if they showed improvement greater than or equal to 2 grades on the HDSS from the start of the study to 4 weeks after their first 2 treatment sessions, or if they had a sustained response after treatment 1 and did not receive re-treatment during the study.84 out of 104 BOTOX treated patients (81%) achieved a greater than 50% reduction in sweating—compared to only 44 out of 108 treated without BOTOX (41%).Results were based on patients’ responses to a questionnaire (The Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale [HDSS]) that assessed the extent to which underarm sweating affected their daily activitiesBOTOX neurotoxin treatment is not a cure; your symptoms will return gradually, and you will know when the time is right for another treatment. Your healthcare provider will recommend a treatment strategy to ensure that you receive the best possible results with BOTOX treatment. IS BOTOX RIGHT FOR ME?
When antiperspirants can't control symptoms of your severe underarm sweating, BOTOX may be able to help. Your healthcare provider can help you decide if BOTOX treatment is right for you. In order to make the right treatment decision, you should discuss the following with your healthcare provider.
  • Your healthcare provider's experience with BOTOX treatment
  • Effectiveness and side effects of BOTOX*
You should tell your dermatologist about all your medical conditions, including if you have:
  • a disease that affects your muscles and nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease], myasthenia gravis or Lambert-Eaton syndrome). See "What is the most important information I should know about BOTOX?"
  • allergies to any botulinum toxin product
  • had any side effect from any botulinum toxin product in the past
  • a breathing problem, such as asthma or emphysema
  • swallowing problems
  • bleeding problems
